Article Guidelines, Rules, and Restrictions Suggested Article Topics
We will be unable to accept articles that promote one side of
a political issue - please see Guidelines, Rules, and
Restrictions for more details. If you are unsure about your
topic choice, please submit a brief proposal for approval
before submitting an entire article. The following are
considered appropriate themes and topics for Empower.
- Reports on and reviews of community or charitable
events occurring in Wake County, NC. Articles might
include things such as who attended, what the event
goals were, how those goals were achieved, and what
the significance of the event might be for other
community members.
- "Did You Know...?" Blurbs on local community or social
issues. Example: Did you know X lbs. of food is thrown
away annually in Wake County? Blurbs should include
a website link where readers can get more information
and learn how to make a difference for the issue at
hand.
- Interviews of and spotlights on Wake County nonprofit
organizations. Interviews of and spotlights on local
volunteers or community leaders.
- Well-researched, well-written editorials on issues
related to charity, volunteerism, civic and community
engagement, and nonprofit work, provided they offer
the appropriate respect for the opposing perspective.
Writers who submit editorials must also allow readers
to submit responses for possible print in future issues.
- Innovative ideas and solutions for current community
and social issues, provided writing shows evidence of
substantial research on the issue.
- The work of organizations or causes outside of Wake
County, NC, as long as the writer can adequately
relate the issue back to the local community,
explaining for example, how the cause is relevant to
people living in our local community.
- Articles must be submitted by the posted deadline
to be considered for printing in the next upcoming
issue of Empower. See submissions page for next
deadline.
- Articles should aim to be between 400-500 words
(blurbs will be shorter). We may consider longer
articles depending on topic and available space -
please submit a proposal for long articles before
submitting a long article itself.
- Those submitting editorial articles must be willing to
allow reader responses to be published in following
issues if deemed appropriate by Empower editors.
- Writers should maintain a list of the sources used
for their articles; Empower aims for high levels of
professionalism and accuracy in writing.
- ME³ and Empower reserve the right to refrain from
publishing any article.
- We are unable to accept articles that promote one
side of a political issue. Empower aims to cover
social and community issues that affect community
members. However, Empower is the project and
product of ME³, a nonprofit charitable organization,
and is obligated to remain neutral regarding political
issues. We may, however, consider accepting
articles on the following topics and may print such
articles if deemed appropriate after review:
--Articles that may contain reports on advocacy as it
pertains to the work of a charitable organization.
--Articles that cover evenly both sides of an advocacy
discussion as long as it is related to the work of a
charitable organization.
